Viva Aerobus chooses Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines for its brand-new Airbus A321 aircraft

Published Tuesday, June 18, 2019

Mexico City, June 18, 2019.- Viva Aerobus, Mexico´s ultra-low-cost carrier, announced the selection of Pratt & Whitney GTF ™ engine for its 41 new Airbus A321neo aircraft, corresponding to the order announced in July 2018, which consisted of the acquisition of 25 A321neo aircraft and the conversion of 16 A320neo aircraft, belonging to the 2013 request, to the A321neo model.

The value of this commercial decision totaling $2.25 billion dollars is part of the abovementioned 2018 transaction and it also includes the integral maintenance service for each of the engines for a period of 12 years.

"We appreciate Viva Aerobus’ continued confidence in Pratt & Whitney," said Rick Deurloo, Chief Customer Officer and Senior Vice President, Customers at Pratt & Whitney. "The state-of-the-art architecture of the GTF engine allows Viva Aerobus to explore new destinations for their customers, while providing unmatched economic and environmental advantages."

The GTF engine, entering into service in early 2016, has reduced fuel burn by 16%. Besides, it has decreased nitrogen oxide emissions by 50%, compared to the regulatory standard, and has reduced noise footprint by 75% in benefit of the environment; key advantages that Viva contemplated for choosing this model.

"At Viva Aerobus we always go for the latest aeronautical advances that increase safety, reliability and efficiency," said Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of Viva Aerobus. "And the technology of these engines allows us to reduce costs thanks to their low fuel consumption. Therefore, we can continue providing a first-class service at the best price," he added.

Viva Aerobus will receive its first Airbus A321 aircraft in 2020, whose capacity for 240 passengers - 54 more seats than the Airbus A320 - will allow the airline to take another step forward in its expansion strategy, which aims to boost national connectivity, as well as the potential of the air market and the development that this implies for the country.

Currently, Viva Aerobus operates a fleet of 34 Airbus A320: 20 with the CEO (Current Engine Option) technology and 14 NEO aircraft (New Engine Option). These airplanes integrate the youngest fleet in Mexico, with an average age less than 3.8 years.
